7 Items to Prepare Before Your Trip
After booking an appointment, it is helpful to create a detailed pet sitter checklist that includes instructions about what to do while you're away. Try to think carefully about the specific details of your pet's daily routine that may be second nature to you but that a new sitter will need to be fully informed about. To help you feel more confident and at ease about leaving your beloved pooch or kitty in the care of a new person, providing the following information may give you the reassurance and peace of mind you seek.
1. Important Documents
Gather the following information and documents:
Your contact information
A backup contact, in case you're ever unavailable
Contact information for your veterinarian and a 24-hour emergency clinic
Signed veterinary release form
Microchip information, if applicable (make sure that your information that is associated with the microchip is up to date, too.)
Your pet's medical records, including vaccination records
A recent photo of your pet that clearly shows their features and markings
Any other documents that are specific to your pet, such as a pet insurance card
Even if you've sent digital copies of these documents, keeping hard copies in a known spot in your home is very helpful. That way, in case there's an emergency and my phone runs out of battery, for example, I'll have all the info I need.
2. Your Emergency Plan
In order to be ready for emergencies leave out the pet carrier. For an anxious cat, leave a bit of catnip, or a favorite toy that might comfort your dog. Make a pet first-aid kit if you don’t have one. Include items like gauze pads, nonstick bandages, and hydrogen peroxide.
3. Pet Supplies
Stock up on pet food and treats, as well as waste bags, and/or cat litter. Don't forget about grooming accessories, brushes and combs.
4. Your Pet's Medicine
If your pet requires medicine, create a medication guide, which describes which pets need medication, the dosage, and side effects to look out for.
5. Details About Their Meal Plan
Sticking to a consistent routine is crucial not only for your pet's physical health but also for their overall well-being. Therefore, it is beneficial to write down your pet's mealtime schedule in a clear and organized manner. Make sure to include specific feeding times, a variety of food options, and appropriate portion sizes for each meal.
6. Potty Supplies
Leave out any supplies needed for cleaning, such as potty bags, disinfectants, vacuum, etc.
7. Playtime Supplies
Please leave out your pet’s favorite toys. They can help us bond and provide comfort while you're away. I’m committed to caring for your pet and keeping them entertained the best I can. This list is just to help you remember important items as you get ready for your trip.
